Why do I get pain?

Dysmenorrhoea is the name given to period pains.  What are the causes of period pains?

bulletFlow Related - the heavier the flow the more likely it is that women will experience pain with the period.

 

bulletFibroids - The commonest cause for very heavy flow is uterine fibroids. Typically the fibroid will be located in the lining of the womb and these fibroids can cause very heavy bleeding indeed.

 

bulletAdenomyosis - an benign, inflammatory condition of the uterus which is a very common cause of pain. There are inflammatory cells within the muscle of the womb which cause bleeding in the muscle of the uterus and this can cause severe pain.

 

bulletEndometriosis - This inflammatory condition can cause pelvic pain at any time in the menstrual cycle but often produces pain during the period or just after the period.
